“You’ll Like Linton”

Linton was originally a village called New Jerusalem.  The village prospered and was renamed Linton after General Linton of Terre Haute, by the federal government in 1835.  General Linton had fought in the war of 1812 and Indian wars and was running for Congress at the time.

Linton was surveyed in 1850 and 40 lots were laid out by Hannah Osborn and Isaiah Coddington.  Linton started showing growth in 1850 when the Indianapolis and Vincennes Railroad ran through the town.  Coal mining in 1870 turned Linton into a boomtown.

Today Linton, situated in Southwestern Indiana and is the center of three major cities: Terre Haute, Vincennes and Bloomington with a population of 6,300.  Linton, Indiana, a place where you can celebrate life, relax, enjoy, and discover.  Linton has a variety of things to offer, is best known as the birthplace of Phil Harris, known for outdoor recreation, and Indiana’s largest Independence Day Parade!

Linton is nestled among hundreds of lakes with the Greene-Sullivan State Forest (www.IN.gov/dnr) at the edge of Linton.  Boating, fishing, hunting, camping, archery and hiking are all very popular.  Just north of Linton is the ever-popular Shakamak State Park (www.IN.gov/dnr).
