Welcome To Linton, Indiana
History
Linton, located in Greene County, is situated in Southwestern Indiana and is the center of three major cities: Terre Haute, Vincennes and Bloomington, with a population of 5,800. Linton, Indiana, a place where you can celebrate life, relax, enjoy, and discover. Linton has a variety of things to offer, is best known as the birthplace of Phil Harris, known for outdoor recreation, and home to Indiana’s largest Independence Day Parade.
Recreation and Parks
The City of Linton provides 580 acres of recreational area, which includes the Phil Harris Municipal Golf Course (18 holes); Linton Conservation Club for fishing lakes, hiking trails, bicycling, and 3-D archery range. Sunset Park for scuba diving, camping and fishing. The Linton City Park or known as Humphrey’s Park, located on the east side of Linton for picnics, miniature golf, swimming (pool & slide), playground fun, tennis and basketball court, horseshoe pits and several shelter houses for family gatherings and community meetings. The City’s recreational area provides areas for the Linton Saddle Club, Buck Creek Muzzle Loaders, Linton baseball and softball, and the Greene County Soccer Complex.
Linton is nestled among hundreds of lakes with the Greene-Sullivan State Forest at the edge of Linton. Boating, fishing, hunting, camping, archery and hiking are all very popular. Just north of Linton is the ever-popular Shakamak State Park.
Redbird SRA, the State’s first off highway vehicle riding facility was opened in the summer of 2003. With over 600 acres of riding area, trails, rocks, mud and hills, parking area with loading ramps and restrooms, it is open to all motorized vehicles (4x4s, dirt bikes, and ATV’s).
Education for Today and Tomorrow
Like our community, Linton-Stockton School Corporation provides a wide range of opportunities for all students. Linton schools are able to offer a wide range of academic opportunities to prepare children for higher education or work.
For those students aspiring to higher education, there are duel credit courses at local and state colleges. Also, for students heading directly into the workforce, Linton is the leading system in the county for school-to-work placement. Additionally, Linton offers private schooling options with Calvary Christian School and Zions Hill Baptist School. As for higher education, Linton is located within a 60-mile radius of 12 continuing education facilities, which include Indiana University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. In addition there are also extensive classes offered by the Community Learning Center.
Community Celebrations
Each year the first weekend following Memorial Day, Linton is the home of the Phil Harris Celebrity Weekend. This is an annual event with Roy Clark continuing the tradition that Phil Harris and Alice Faye began in the late 70’s. This event includes a variety show with Roy Clark and friends. The Phil Harris Golf Course is host to a golf tournament held in conjunction with the weekend events. Many celebrities have taken part in this worthwhile event including Jimmy Dean, Boots Randolph, and Tommy Smothers just to name a few.
Each July 4, The Linton Freedom Festival is host to the largest Independence Day Parade in the State of Indiana with approximately 40,000 in attendance. The Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce hosts this 7-day event, which includes a carnival, live entertainment and fireworks.
Labor Day weekend finds Linton packed for the annual Linton Music Fest in Humphrey’s Park. This event boosts a variety of bands on 4 stages throughout the weekend playing a variety of music from country and bluegrass to blues and rock n roll. In addition, an annual chili cook off takes place in conjunction with this festival.
Shopping includes national retailers and a charming downtown shopping district
Shopping in Linton provides a variety of selections. We are the home to national retailers like, Wal-Mart, Sears and Goody’s Family Clothing and regional retails such as Pomp's Tire and Orscheln’s Farm & Home. That is only part of the Linton shopping experience. There is also a historic downtown with upscale clothing store, gift shops and antique mall.
Additionally, there is a wide selection of dining from local favorites like the Old Bank & Company Restaurant, Double Dog and the Sportsman’s Pub to Chinese, Mexican, and Amish.
Seniors enjoy retiring in Linton
Linton is an excellent place for seniors to retire because they can enjoy an easy, active lifestyle with the comfort, convenience, and security older adults seeks. Glenburn Home is the center of activity for area seniors with their active Community Center and its various programs from exercise equipment and classes to monthly tours.

Linton is a community of people that care for each other. Evident by the presence of many active local service clubs and nonprofit service organizations, residents put both resources and time back into the community. We have a long tradition of service and caring for each other that is a characteristic that permeates our entire way of life. Linton is also the home to 22 local churches that actively give back to the community through a spirit of service and dedication.
