Phil Harris Golf Course

Located two miles east of
Linton on State Road 54 and named after Actor/Singer
Phil
Harris. The golf course was originally owned by a group of individuals
in the early 1930’s. It was given to the City of Linton in the early
1930’s and at this time, it was a nine-hole golf course.
Today, it is an 18-hole golf course and is totally
self-supporting. Included on the course are a Pro Shop and Club House.
A lot of famous people have played the course
including: Phil Harris, is lovely wife Alice Faye, Doug Sanders, Neil
Armstrong, Mike Souchak, Dave Marr, Forrest Tucker, Ron Meyer, Denny
Crum, Sam Wyche, Roy Clark, Johnny Unitas, Jay Herbert, and Ernie Banks
to name a few.
Some BIG Moments have taken place on this course! Russ
Smith and Bob Ford, former Purdue basketball standouts, and Jim Jackson
are responsible for three of the great moments in the history of the
Friends of Phil Harris Classic (takes place the weekend after the Indy
500 every year).
In 1985, Smith scored an ace on the umber One Hole, 135
yards in length. For his efforts, Smith was awarded a new Mazda truck,
courtesy of Dick Leonard Imports in Vincennes.
Ford holed out on the Number Ten Hole, 110 yards in
length, in 1987. Bob took home two airline tickets, compliments of
American Airlines and a week’s stay at Carefree Inn Resort in Phoenix,

Jim Jackson holed out on the 145-yard Number One Hole
in 1995.
In 1998, Turk Roman scored an ace on #7 to win $500.00
from Peoples Trust Company Bank and also a set of clubs from Kramer
Motors.
